PRODUCTION CREW

For those who like to build, paint, and design, it’s the perfect place to learn about, and do, the technical aspects of theater: set construction/decoration, props, costumes, lighting, sound, and stage managing. No prior knowledge is required, adult assistance available at all times for those who need it. Members will be given direct responsibility based on experience. Production Crew applicants who meet these requirements are eligible to be selected for the running crew.

ONSTAGE

For those who like to act, sing and/or dance; cast learn, practice, and perfect the craft through rehearsals and vocal and acting training, and hair and make-up workshops.

JUST FOR FUN

SST offers not only the opportunity to produce and perform in a full-scale musical production, but also social activities. Members enjoy chaperoned ice cream parties, Karaoke Night,  “Secret Snack,” cast parties, “Theme Thursdays,” pizza parties, game night, and other activities.

REGISTRATION & MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

SST is open to students entering high school in the fall of 2017 through those who are not yet 23 by 8/15/17. Applicants do not have to be residents of Simsbury.  SST applicants are required to be able to work cooperatively, be self-directed, self-regulating and display appropriate behavior. Production Crew applicants who meet these requirements will be a part of the crew. Onstage applicants who meet these requirements will have the opportunity to audition, and those not selected for the cast are assigned to the production crew.

To register for the Production Crew: Production Crew forms (membership and health; DVD orders are optional) can be mailed with a membership check (made out to SST) to Simsbury Summer Theatre, 3 Browngate Lane, Simsbury, CT 06070. If the registration fee is mailed, please send an email to sstprez@gmail.com so that we know to expect your forms and check. If you would prefer, Production Crew forms and check can be dropped off in person at the theater during auditions. Cost for the production crew is $320. Should a crew member decide not to continue with SST, a $150 refund will be issued if the request to withdraw is made no later than 6/25/17.

To audition for onstage: Auditioners must bring completed forms (membership, health and audition; makeup and DVD orders are optional) and a check for the registration fee in order to audition.   Scroll down for specific audition requirements and role descriptions.

COST

SST is completely self-funded; no funding is received from the Town of Simsbury or outside sources.  As a not-for-profit, all monies go directly back to the program and membership fees are used for the benefit of participants.

Cost is $640 for the six-week session. Cost for siblings is $640 for the first child, $450 for each additional child in the cast.

Membership may be terminated by the Adult Board of Directors if participants break SST rules or policies.

REFUND POLICY

In the unlikely event the number of auditioners exceeds the necessary cast size, applicants not selected for the cast will be assigned to the production crew. Crew responsibilities include props, costumes, make-up, set construction, running crew and house. Should they so choose, crew members are welcome to audition for the cast the following summer. Registration fees for a crew member will be applied and a refund of the difference supplied if an auditioner becomes part of the crew.

Cast who decide not to continue with SST after 6/19/17 and before 6/25/17 will be refunded $320.

Requests for refunds must be made to Nancy Grandin at sstprez@gmail.com. No refunds are given for any reason after 6/25/17.

REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES

Rehearsal/Performance Location: Werner Centennial Theater, Westminster School.

Rehearsals: Rehearsals start June 26.

Rehearsals are Monday through Thursday, 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

A specific rehearsal schedule will be provided. Ensemble members are typically dismissed earlier than 10:30 for the first 3 weeks. Leads, dancers and singing ensembles will have 6 p.m. rehearsal calls (as scheduled).

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE

Show dates are August 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.

Strike and Closing Party (members are encouraged to attend): August 6, 2017.

VACATION POLICY

Cast (includes Dance Corps) members may miss up to 5 days of vacation during the first four weeks. All absences must be registered on the membership application and cast audition form.

Additional time may be taken if approved by the Artistic Director and Board President. Participants can request a waiver for 5th week of rehearsal absences for college orientation, family wedding/reunion or a mission trip which cannot be scheduled another time. Approval will be made on a case-by-case basis; requests must be submitted in writing at auditions or, if possible, by email (sstprez@gmail.com) prior to auditions.

Missed time may affect casting and blocking; principals cannot miss rehearsals (exceptions can be made in the event of a family emergency or college orientation). No cast member may miss a performance. Failure to comply may mean loss of a part (onstage) and/or revoked membership.  SST charges a flat fee for membership, therefore no reduction in fees will be made for missed time.

Production Crew members may take as much time as they would like, but should note that this can affect participation in running crew.  SST charges a flat fee for membership, therefore no reduction in fees will be made for missed time.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

All SST members must sell at least three business ads and at least three personal patrons (levels vary). Members are also expected to distribute ticket flyers to family, neighbors and friends.

On the Town Roles and Audition Requirements

General Audition Requirements:  The directors strongly recommend auditioning with a Broadway song (does not have to be from the show) that shows off your voice.

Each auditioner will be asked to sing 16 bars of this song. Please bring sheet music for the accompanist.  While not preferred, a cappella is accepted as are non-Broadway songs.

Not accepted: CD accompaniment or other instrumental accompaniment. Each auditioner will be given a number. Auditions are closed, no parents, friends or other may sit in on the auditions.

Dance Auditions: Dancers must audition wearing appropriate dance shoes and dance wear. It is only necessary to come for one night, not both, of auditions.

Principal & Secondary Role Audition Requirements:

To audition for a principal or secondary role, auditioners must perform a song of your choice AND present the appropriate memorized monologue and sing (does not have to be from memory) the selected song in the link below:

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Principal Roles

The Three Sailors:

Ozzie: Vocal range: Character baritone, F flat to C. Ozzie is one of three sailors on 24-hour shore leave in New York City. Of the three, he is the most worldly and most interested in meeting a girl for a fling during his day in the City. Ozzie feels a tremendous loyalty to Gabey, who at some point during their lives in the Navy saved the lives of Ozzie, Chip and others. Ozzie should be able to present himself as a relatively big and strong person (in one scene he is said to resemble a statue of a prehistoric man in the Natural History Museum). Ozzie’s love interest is Clair de Loone, a budding anthropologist.

Chip:  Vocal range: Baritone, G flat to G. Chip is one of three sailors on 24-hour shore leave in New York City. Of the three, he is the most naive and the one least interested in meeting a girl for a fling during his day in the City (though he is not completely uninterested). He wants to see the sights of New York City so he can tell his Dad all about them, as is made clear in his duet with Hildy, “Come Up To My Place.”

Gabey:  Vocal range: Baritone, G flat to G. Gabey is the third sailor on shore leave and the one most prone to being a romantic. He has performed some unknown heroic deeds on his ship. Gabey falls in love with the ideal of a woman as presented in a post of “Miss Turnstiles” (Ivy Smith) and spends the show pursuing her. The actor portraying Gabey must be able to authentically project his naivete, his optimism and his romanticism. Gabey is involved in several dance sequences.

The Three Girls:

Clair:  Soprano, low F to high C. Clair de Loone is a self-described “cold blood scientist,” an anthropologist to be precise who cannot control her impulses. She is engaged in the study of man in order to control her impulses. The actress portraying Clair must have a strong singing voice and great comic timing. Although she is engaged to be married to Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework, Clair’s love interest is Ozzie.

Hildy:  Mezzo-soprano, low A to high G. Hildy is a cab driver who is desperately hungry for a man. She shares an apartment with Lucy Schmeeler, wherein one girl lives in the apartment 12 hours a day while the other is working. Hildy meets Chip when Chip is looking for a cab and then spends much of the rest of the show trying to seduce him. Hildy also has a soft side and wants to help Gabey over his disappointment of not being able to find Miss Turnstiles.

Ivy:  Mezzo-soprano, low C to high G. Ivy Smith is “Miss Turnstiles,” and she is by turns an innocent as well as someone who is a bit conniving as she tries to get ahead. At heart, though, she is a romantic. Her love interest is Gabey. The actress portraying Ivy must be able convincingly to portray her striving to better herself while also maintaining her essential optimism. Ivy’s role is primarily a dancing role, she has a number of dance sequences and it is important that she be either a dancer or one who can learn movement easily.

Madame Dilly:  Mezzo-soprano, C to high E flat. Madame Dilly is Ivy’s singing teacher and very much a lush. She provides comic relief and is a bit of a conniver. Strong comedic presence.

Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework:  Bass. Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework is engaged to Clair de Loone. He is a bit too understanding of Clair’s problems with men. A dignified fellow with great comic timing.

Secondary Singing Roles

Workman 1: opens the show with the soulful lament, “I Feel Like I’m Not Out of Bed Yet.”

Diana Dream & Dolores Dolores:  Soprano. Dolores Dolores  and Diana Dream are nightclub singers who appear and sing rather depressingly when the group is trying to cheer up Gabe.

Rajah Bimmy: Bass Rajah is the MC for a dancing show featuring Ivy.

Secondary Speaking Roles:

There are several speaking roles, which do not require any lead singing. The non-singing roles are:

Lucy Schmeeler: Hildy’s roommate. She has a terrible cold and provides comic relief.

Flossie: Flossie is a character on the subway in each subway scene who tells an elaborate story about an altercation with her boss throughout the show.

On The Town has many additional roles. These will be cast out of the main audition, not at callbacks. The directors reserve the right to cast principal and secondary roles out of the main auditions as they see fit.

Canta perecimus perpaucis tamdiu instructa ut omnia conficere possemus nihilo tandem deducta.
"We have done so much with so little for so long, we can now do anything with nothing."
